The government has recently announced that the maximum retail price of a Covid-19 self-test kit will be capped at RM19.90 per unit, with the wholesale price not more than RM16 a unit, effective from 5 September 2021.

In a joint statement, both Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that the demand for these self-test kits is expected to increase following heightened public awareness on self-testing. The price control is imposed to ensure that they remain affordable for businesses and the public.

Nanta warned that legal actions will be taken against anyone who is caught defying the new regulation under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

Individuals found guilty may be fined up to RM100,000, or jailed up to three years, or both for the first offense. Companies will face a fine of up to RM500,000 for the first offense and RM1 million for subsequent offenses.
