One of the many fun activities that Klang Valley peeps can look forward to during the night is whizzing around the city in e-scooters (electronic scooters). And one of the popular spots to do so is the road in front of KL’s iconic building, Dataran Merdeka. However, you won’t be able to do so any longer.
No More E-Scooter Rides Allowed At One Of KL’s Famous Landmarks
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has banned all e-scooter rides at Dataran Merdeka on 5th June 2022. The decision was made in line with the government’s recent directive that no permission will be given to riding e-scooters on public roads except in the gazetted areas.
DBKL also stated that on Saturday that they have seized two e-scooters rented to the public for unauthorised activity. No permit was given for the operator to rent out the e-scooters.
“No permission has been given by DBKL for this activity. The enforcement personnel have also lodged a police report against the operator for obstructing the duties of civil servants while the seized electric scooters were taken to the DBKL Seizure Store in Jalan Lombong, Cheras,” it added in the statement.
On 26th April, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had reportedly said that micro-mobility vehicles including the moped, personal mobility devices (PMD) and personal mobility aids (PMA) were banned from use on roads with immediate effect.
A moped is a vehicle fitted with two or three wheels and driven by people or electrical source with a speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h). The PMD and PMA are vehicles driven by humans or electricity with a speed not exceeding 25 km/h for the use of individuals with mobility problems.
