By now, everyone knows what a cronut is thanks to the invention of French pastry chef, Dominique Ansel! Way back in 2013, this successful New York-based legend started a worldwide phenomenon with his croissant-doughnut hybrid: the cronut. Since then, many more unique, hybrid pastries have popped up globally, especially in Malaysia! From croissant lavas to mochi puffs, here’s our list of KL & PJ’s crème de la crème.
Where To Find The Most Unique Pastries In Town
1. Cronuts
Croissant-doughnuts. Soft, buttery and flaky pastry fried in grapeseed oil (typically), while retaining the shape and essence of a doughnut. All the craze back then, still the craze right now!
KLCG Confectionary & Bakery Factory
KLCG aka Kuala Lumpur City Gallery launched a confectionery & bakery spin-off in August this year. Their specialty cronuts rapidly attracted a TON of sweet-toothed customers, selling out daily. According to them, they only source the finest ingredients from France for that flaky, buttery experience. Apart from their variety of flavours such as cinnamon, chocolate, matcha, durian etc, you can also grab yourself a seasonal box too!
The current flavours are lotus biscoff, peach, lemon zest and strawberry. Drool.

Dotty’s Pastries & Coffee
Mamma mia, would you look at that? A popular choice for most, Dotty’s stands out for their different ideas and creative pastries. Their salted egg yolk cronuts have been a regular hit and we’ve raved about them too! Depending on the season and celebration, they also release interesting cronut flavours such as their butter chicken cronut for Deepavali this year. We love a diverse bakery.

2. Croissant Cubes
The name says it all. Croissants, but in cube form! It’s the brainchild of Swedish baker Bedros Kabranian, who simply desired a new shape for the French breakfast staple. They’re essentially just geometrical croissants, but who’s complaining?
Dotty’s Pastries & Coffee
Currently, Dotty’s Pastries & Coffee is the main bakery selling these in KL. They’re available until the end of November, so if you like trying novelty goods, make sure to check them out! Their flavours include red velvet, pandan ovomaltine, nutella chocolate, speculoos and salted egg.

3. Mochi Puff
It only makes sense, doesn’t it? Jiggly and creamy on the inside with bread-like texture externally. Originated from Japan, mochi puffs are formed through the transformation of mochigome into a light, crispy morsel. Move over sticky mochi, these powerful puffs are coming through.
Family Mart
But of course, Family Mart has it! Malaysia’s favourite Japanese snack store sells assorted mochi puffs, with flavours that come and go. Their Hokkaido Melon Puffs are gorgeous, but they other delicious ones too. Warning: photos are for illustration only, they’re packaged and sold individually!

4. Croissant Lava Cake
Honestly, how versatile are croissants? Pair them with “lava” and boom (pun intended), volcano cake. They’re ash-coloured croissants on the outside with your choice of lava cream on the inside. This dessert apparently went viral in Korea and now, you can try them right here in KL too.
Park-In Bing Sutt
This virtual pop-up store is part of Park-in Malaysia, a neo-Chinese restaurant and bar. They drew inspiration by Hong Kong Classic Cha Chaan Teng, creating polo bun “burgers” both savoury and sweet. Their combinations are certainly interesting albeit a tad strange! In September 2021, they launched their line of 6-inch volcano cakes, with flavours like durian and matcha! Unfortunately they are not halal, but fellow Muslim foodies can scroll down to the next store for halal options!

The origin of its name dates back all the way to 1891, when a race to Paris from the town of Brest was launched to encourage bicycle use.
