SUNWAY CITY KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA; 16th OCTOBER 2024 – In an inspiring fusion of tradition, environmental responsibility and social empowerment, Sunway Resort Hotel proudly unveils the first-ever Eco-Rangoli in collaboration with Mereka, Biji-Biji Initiativeand the Women Development Centre PSPK (Pertubuhan Perkhidmatan Sosial dan PerbangunanKomuniti Daerah Gombak, Selangor) EcoHub through the Beyond Bins Programme. This ground-breaking initiative demonstrates how cultural preservation can seamlessly align with sustainability and community empowerment, setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious celebrations.
On display in the hotel lobby from 15th October to 2nd November 2024, the Eco-Rangoli is a vibrant symbol of collective action and environmental consciousness. Crafted from 30 kilograms of discarded plastic, the installation is composed of more than 1,600 recycled bottle caps, which were collected, crushed and meticulously assembled by the women of PSPK EcoHub. This intricate artwork is more than just a decorative tribute to Deepavali as it carries a powerful message about upcycling, waste reduction and social empowerment.
TURNING PLASTIC WASTE INTO A COLLECTIVE OPPORTUNITY
This initiative demonstrates that even small changes can make a significant environmental impact. By repurposing 30 kilograms of plastic waste, the Eco-Rangoli has prevented the release of 90 kilograms of CO2 emissionswhich is the equivalent of charging 11,500 smartphones or driving 365 km in a petrol-fueled car. The transformation of discarded materials into a meaningful artwork also supports the principles of the circular economy, diverting plastic waste from landfills and preventing further environmental harm.
Following the Deepavali celebrations, the plastic from the Rangoli will be upcycled into eco-friendly coasters, reinforcing the importance of sustainable waste management. This initiative exemplifies Sunway Resort Hotel’s tri-commitment to environmental stewardship, community empowerment and cultural preservation, perfectly aligning with the hotel’s #SunwayforGoodinitiative and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
BIJI-BIJI INITIATIVE’S BEYOND BINS PROGRAMME
The Beyond Bins Programme empowers marginalised communities with the tools and knowledge to recycle plastic waste using small-scale recycling machines, creating alternative income streams and promoting environmental awareness. The programme has successfully diverted tonnes of plastic from landfills while fostering entrepreneurship and environmental responsibility. Through partnerships with corporate clients, Beyond Bins showcases how waste can become a valuable resource, driving sustainable product development and setting an example of responsible waste management.
