80-Year-Old Uncle Who Sells Charcoal Bakkwa Buns On His Motorbike Now Has His Very Own Café In Pudu

Finally, after 40 years!

They say good things take time, and in this uncle’s case, it rings true. Uncle Chai aka “Uncle Six”, is an 80-year-old man who has been selling charcoal-toasted bakkwa (bbq dried meat) buns since 1982, on his humble motorcycle. Now, after 40 years of experience, he finally has his very own shop in Pudu!

Born and raised in Sentul, Uncle Chai used to work several jobs in his early years. In the early 80s, he began selling bakkwa and floss buns in the morning while working at a cinema later in the evening. However, his side business turned into his full-time job once the cinema closed down, and he would travel on his motorcycle to busy areas whenever he could.

As he aged, he settled for a stall at Imbi market initially but soon after, moved to a fixed spot at ICC Pudu. He named his business “Winson Burger”, inspired by the Chinese translation of “everlasting victory”. At 8am everyday, Uncle Chai would park his old motorcycle by the roadside and start his day of selling bakkwa and floss buns, toasted over charcoal. He explains that back in the day, the older generation would toast buns this way as it gave the bread aroma and extra flavour.

He first toasts the buns over charcoal, then filled them with meat floss, followed by some cucumbers, bakkwa and sauce. It’s a classic Chinese breakfast that he aimed to make affordable, barely charging RM 3.30 per bun to earn profit.

As of 10th December, Uncle Chai officially has his own café located in Pudu as well, launched by Gary Lim (business owner). The café, Uncle 6 Toast Bar, is named after the uncle himself and emulates a kopitiam concept. Their menu is authentic to Chinese-style coffee shops, highlighting the popular bakkwa buns and other kopitiam favourites. Their prices remain affordable, with good portions and delectable flavours too!
