According to a report by MalayMail, the independent rescuer Ong Siew Hiang prefers to depend on herself rather than public donations when it comes to looking after the welfare of her stray dogs. The 59-year-old currently sells burgers at the Rock Cafe in Bandar Sunway to help in her rescue costs. However, running a burger stall may very well be right in her track as she was previously a trained chef specialising in Thai food.

Ong started her independent shelter rescuing stray dogs 6 years ago. All of her income from the stall goes directly to her shelter. She needs around RM6,000 to RM7,000 per month for the shelter’s operation, including hiring a helper on ground to look after the dogs.

Ong’s shelter called – Survivor Shelter now has 47 dogs, mostly picked up by Ong on the streets. She said that most of the strays are victims of hit-and-run and she would nurse them back to health before letting them stay on at the shelter.
