A Hidden Gem In Rawang For Authentic Hailam Kopitiam Breakfast

Located along the streets of Rawang old town is this unassuming coffee shop that looks like it’s been around for ages (literally). Opened for over 80 years, Ng San Coffee Shop is currently run by three elderly brothers after taking over from their father. Transport yourself to simpler times at their kopitiam because every thing here is maintained from the olden times. Most impressive of it all is the charcoal operated toaster/water boiler that they’re still using to prepare their food.

Over here at Ng San, you’ll only find a simple food menu – soft boiled eggs, toasted bread, steamed bread and nasi lemak bungkus. Of course, you can find the usual coffee and tea too. Everything is prepared upon order by three brothers using the charcoal stove. The charcoal stove is not only used to toast bread, but also boils water used for making drinks and steamer for bread. It’s definitely a one-of-kind stove you can’t find anywhere else nowadays.

A tradition and method passed down from their father, using the charcoal stove was the best and only way they knew of. Charcoal toasted breads are definitely a rare gem. However, a nicely toasted bread is not an easy task. It’s harder to control the heat with charcoal and it takes a longer time to get that golden brown colour. So it’s highly recommended to visit the place during weekdays, where there are only a handful of customers.
