Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, 7 August 2026 – Get ready to witness some impressive skating action as Skate Asia 2026 returns to Malaysia for its 24th and largest edition yet!
Taking place at Sunway Pyramid Ice from 6 to 16 August 2026, this year’s competition brings together around 1,400 skaters from 38 ice rinks across the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 4,000 competitive programmes taking place over 11 days.
Malaysia Takes Centre Stage For Skate Asia 2026
Skate Asia is hosted by a different country each year and returns to Malaysia as part of its four-year regional rotation. Organised in collaboration with Ice Skating Institute Asia (ISIAsia) and supported by the Ice Skating Association of Malaysia (ISAM), the event places Malaysia at the heart of the regional ice skating community.
According to Harry Janto Leo, President of Ice Skating Institute Asia, regional competitions such as Skate Asia give skaters valuable exposure to different skating styles and international competition standards.
The competition also provides a welcoming platform for developing skaters to gain experience, improve their skills and compete alongside athletes from across the region.
This marks the seventh time Skate Asia has been held in Malaysia since 1999, with Sunway Pyramid Ice hosting every Malaysian edition to date.
Celebrating 30 Years Of Sunway Pyramid Ice
The return of Skate Asia is also a special milestone for Sunway Pyramid Ice, which is celebrating its 30th year as Malaysia’s longest-serving ice skating rink.
Located inside Sunway Pyramid, the rink has played an important role in introducing ice skating to Malaysians and nurturing generations of skaters. Its central location, with views of the rink from five surrounding levels, also allows shoppers and visitors to watch competitions while enjoying the mall.
Over the years, Sunway Pyramid Ice has helped nurture Malaysian skating talents who went on to achieve major milestones on the international stage.
Among them is Fang Ze Zeng, who won gold in men’s singles figure skating at the 2025 SEA Games, and Julian Yee, who became the first Malaysian figure skater to compete at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Both began their skating journeys at Sunway Pyramid Ice before going on to represent Malaysia at major competitions.
A Celebration Of Ice Skating And Young Talent
Albert Cheok, Senior Director of Sunway Pyramid Ice, highlighted the rink’s role in making ice skating accessible as both a recreational activity and a competitive sport in Malaysia.
For Skate Asia 2026, participants will compete on the same ice where some of Malaysia’s top skaters began their journeys, giving younger athletes an opportunity to see what they can achieve with dedication and the right opportunities.
The opening ceremony kicked off with a flag parade featuring participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Vietnam and the USA.
The celebration also featured a dance-on-ice performance by Crowns Cheerleading & Tumbling, a festive 24-drum performance by Sunway University, and a special performance by competition alumnus and SEA Games gold medallist Fang Ze Zeng, powered by LEPAS.
LEPAS Joins Skate Asia 2026
As a co-sponsor of Skate Asia 2026, LEPAS, a new energy vehicle brand, is also supporting Sunway Pyramid’s efforts to encourage youth engagement and nurture athletic talent in Malaysia.
Sarah Choo, Senior Brand Director of LEPAS Malaysia, shared that the partnership reflects the brand’s philosophy of “Drive Your Elegance”, drawing parallels between the grace and confidence of figure skating and LEPAS’ approach to elegant mobility.
