Foodies, we know we don’t do food reviews that often, but when we do, we tend to deliver the best. We stumbled upon Uncle Don’s sometime ago and decided to give it a try, since their ratings on Google looks promising. My oh my, we were impressed so here’s another round of foodventure with us. What’s Cool at Uncle Don’s?
From the outside Uncle Don’s may look like any other typical restaurant, but with a lively atmosphere. Step inside and you’ll be welcomed by their rustic, upbeat ambience, and their attentive service is a plus point. We visited their Cheras branch only to find out later that this is their new outlet. We were told that Uncle Don’s serve fusion fares, including some Portugese dishes like the Devil’s Curry. Their prices on the menu is super attractive though, especially their Lunch sets. A lot of booze promotion ongoing we couldn’t resist ourselves from getting some to beat the unruly heat.
Taste Test:
These are some of the recommendations from their waiter, we must say the presentation looks promising. For starters, we ordered the bestselling Nachos Chili Con Carne with (From RM18.50). Crispy nachos drenched in homemade tangy sauce with added jalapeno for that extra crunch and flavor. That bed of melted cheese adds this hint of milky, creamy flavor to it, finger-licking good.
For mains, we had the Melaka Portugese Asam Pedas Fish (RM14.50). This has got to be our favourite, not only it comes with a side of rice and keropok (cracker), the flavor and portion is just right. Tangy curry with a hint of sweetness coming off from the eggplant, the stingray absorbs all the flavors. With its freshness, the dish was somehow elevated and all the flavors exploded in our mouth.
We love our meats so we had both the Grilled Chicken Chop (RM12.50) and Australian Sticky Pork Ribs (RM37). The portion and flavor of their chicken chop is a steal, given its price point. There’s basically nothing much to complain about, just some good chicken.
Their pork ribs on the other hand, half slab ribs marinated over 24 hours and oven cooked. The meat sucked up all the flavors from marination and leaves a slightly caramel-like stickiness aftertaste. It’s not fall-off-the-bone kind of ribs but tender enough while still remaining its texture. Served with mashed potatoes, corn and roasted vegetables on the side, this meal fits a king.
Jumping off to the last one that we all have been waiting for, Carlsberg extra cold in Frozen Mug (RM10.95). Ever been to a negative Celsius place and have ice cream or soda? That was what we felt on our first sip. Fizzy, icy cold down the throat that gave us that chill, we had goosebumps for a second. Perfect especially during the day under the scorching hot sun.
Final Thoughts:
We finally understood all the good reviews and ratings of this place. The quality and service that they provide is well beyond the price tag. With their casual, upbeat vibe, they’re perfect for a casual meet up, afterwork dinner or even chill spot. Good food, good booze and good vibes, only at Uncle Don’s. Tag all your friends for a chill date, trust it, this spot won’t break your bank.
