One of the core components in nasi lemak is delicious sambal – it’s how we determine if the dish is good or great! Some like it sweet, while others prefer it spicy. Well, imagine being given four kinds of sambal to choose from! That’s why Balut Nasi Lemak, a new café in town, is where you need to visit for the ultimate nasi lemak experience.
Balut Offers 4 Sambal Options To Pair With Their Nasi Lemak
Nestled away in Sunway Nexis is Balut Nasi Lemak, one of the latest cafés to have opened its doors this year. The owners rebranded Feebay.Co café into this local-favourites spot after receiving an influx of nasi lemak orders during the MCO! In doing so, they aimed to give new life to our national dish by creating various kinds of sambal alongside appetising sides.
Interior & Exterior
The spacious surroundings at Balut exudes a stylish and contemporary ambience, complete with a spiral staircase in the middle.
Here, customers can dine, work or study peacefully while enjoying a scrumptious meal and a good cuppa.
As for their menu, it focuses on a diverse selection of Malaysian treasures. Here’s what we tried:
Nasi Lemak Balut Set
Albeit different, Balut’s nasi lemak stays true to the quintessential goodness of a classic nasi lemak. On top of usual ingredients, this set also consists of fragrant jati and jasmine rice, fried gourd and fried potatoes along with two free choices of sambal!
The four types of sambal you can choose from are:
Klate– sweet sambal made with gula melaka
Balut– signature homeblend sambal
T’ganu– East Coast style sambal with fish bits
Arwah– Spicy sambal cooked with extra heat from chilli paste & dried chilli (Warning)
Hot tip: be sure to pair your dish with a delicious latte or flat white too!
There are several side dishes available to elevate your nasi lemak such as their Ayam Goreng Berempah, Sotong Goreng and more!
Char Kuey Teow
In addition to their signature nasi lemak, this dish was a personal favourite. It managed to hit every mandatory note in a hot plate of wok-charred noodles with cockles, fishcakes, chicken pieces and more! The secret? Balut’s chef uses his own homemade fermented kicap. Now that’s not something you see everyday.
If you’re a fan of lontong, then this would satiate your appetite. It’s a sweeter version of your standard lontong, yet hearty and flavourful! It contains turmeric santan gravy, soohoon, dried tauhu and shrimps, candlenut with their signature sambal and tempeh on the side.
We’ve all had mantao with curry, but what about sambal? Served with four kinds, this appetiser consists of both fried and steamed buns! Of course, with soft and fluffy centres.
Finish off your meal with a refreshing Sirap Bandung drink, the Balut way!
Furthermore, they serve specialty coffee that are roasted by Feebay.Co. One of their baristas was also a competitor in the recent Malaysian Barista Championship 2022, making it to the top 10! Their coffees are an aromatic house blend of Latin American beans, with a variety such as Latte, Flat White, Cappuccino, Americano and a few more of their house specials.
A New Space With Local Flavours
With a vision to expand abroad in the future, there’s no doubt Balut Nasi Lemak will continue exceeding local and foreign expectations. It takes on traditional dishes and adds a creative flair, without straying far from its respected roots! Next time you’re craving a unique twist to local dishes, be sure to stop by Balut for a satisfying meal. Enjoy foodies!
