This is for the chill boos to sway to acoustic songs while enjoying a drink or two! Unconventional in both concept and location, Barlai promises a refreshing new bar experience in downtown KL. Inconspicuously located in a compact ground floor space among a row of mostly untouched 1920’s heritage houses, Pahit (once known as Barlai) a retro watering hole features an impressive selection of handcrafted alcoholic concoctions and some notable creations include the whiskey-based Milo Kaw and panda-infused Piña Colada.

Travel Hub Guesthouse’s bar is a discreet haven for drinkers, located just a short stroll away from Petaling Street. To get to the bar, you’ll have to go through the guesthouse on the first floor to the back and climb a spiral staircase up. It also has a pretty sweet view considering how under-the-radar this bar is – one can see the Twin Towers and Menara KL from the rooftop.

Influenced heavily by Malaysian vibes, this cocktail bar showcases an eclectic mix of the fun and quirky decor. Be prepared to be hit by the nostalgic vibes of an old-timey Malayan atmosphere. Even the delicious drinks and food here are not spared as almost every item on the menu is given a local twist.
The food exhibits a sense of whimsy too – Malaysian-inspired fusion fare, including fettuccine chilli pan mee (RM8), spaghetti wantan noodles, stuffed eggs with ikan bilis sambal, fish & chips with assam sauce, & chicken chop with salted egg sauce, each priced below RM20, making BarAtas an affordable choice for a pre-drinks dinner.
The local influence is unmistakable in the cocktails as well – the Cendol Atas (RM28) & Cold Fire ice lollies (RM20; a nostalgic childhood treat, filled here with a blend of tea & whiskey) could be fine-tuned (one’s too frosty, the other’s too sweet), but this imaginative bar obviously has potential.

#5 Fuego Troika Sky Dining
They’ve got drinks, food, and Mexican guacamole! Fuego has a special place in our hearts. Apart from the stunning city skyline that is expected when dining here, the South American arm of Troika Sky Dining is alike its counterparts in consistently dishing out quality eats. Bring friends or family, as long as the group loves meat!
It’s imperative you begin with an order (maybe two) of The Fuego Guacamole (RM20), a failproof rendition served with baked lotus and beetroot chips. We here for the star of all, a rare French Beef Flank (RM125) that’s rubbed with peaty whiskey salt, yuzu, and black pepper sauce. The hearty meat main is good for two so make sure not to over order as their smoky cocktails await — think Whiskey Sour with Smoked Bourbon (RM36) and Margarita with charcoal-grilled lemon.
