MYDIN Says Increase in Theft on Daily Necessities Instead of Expensive Goods

Malaysians are facing one of the worst economic downturn in decades due to the pandemic and stringent lockdown, for the third time. Many are struggling to the point where they couldn’t even afford to put food on the table. MYDIN recently shared that there has been an increase in theft at their stores, not on expensive goods, but basic necessities, and that is heartbreaking.

According to Malaysiakini, Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, founder of retail chain MYDIN said people are resorting to stealing essential items from his stores due to the current situation.

“There has been an increase in theft from our stores, but not for big items such as television sets. There are people stealing fish and vegetables… that is very sad,” he said.

Ameer added that the sale of instant noodles on the other hand, has skyrocketed, not because people are lazy to cook, but rather that’s all that they could afford.

Back in the days, people would steal televisions and other high-value items. Today, they’re stealing ikan kembung (mackerel) and vegetables.

The retail chain recently came up with MYDIN Prihatin, an initiative to help the needy. Within 24 hours, they’ve already received 5,000 requests, and that is just a drop in the ocean. This shows how bad the economic hardship has affected us Malaysians.

Let’s Help Each Other During This Trying Time

Foodies, let us all join hands and offer a helping hand to those in need within our means. The economic downturn is such a wake up call that as Malaysian, we can do better. Don’t be afraid to fly a white flag if you need assistance, we can all go through this together. Take care, and stay safe.
