Nasi Kukus Tonggek in Mid Valley Like What?!

To be honest, we were skeptical when we first heard of its opening. Like an east coast local delicacy in a mall? That doesn’t sound right. Still, we gave it a shot and oh boy, we were so wrong! Located in Food Junction at Level 3, from afar, Nasi Kukus Tonggek looks like a fast food joint. It attracted our attention right away with the yellow and red tone used, and their chicken mascot of course.

The menu is simple. You choose from the three nasi kukus available. The original Nasi Kukus Tonggek with chicken, sotong or fish. Then, you can opt to add on other toppings or just stick to the regular. We ended up over-ordering because, well, it’s our job to review everything for you guys.

Truth Unfold: The Taste Test of Nasi Kukus Tonggek

Just by the presentation, we find it very interesting. A mini update, those who are mad for using recycled condensed milk can, relax. They’ve replaced it with stainless steel cans which is totally safe, we loved their ethics.

Their classic, Nasi Kukus Ayam Tonggek (RM8.90) gets an approval from us. First things first, lift up the can. We find joy in doing so, the excitement you get while unveiling your own food is indescribable. Their chicken leg are char-grilled into perfection, locking the juices into the meat. Tender, you get to the taste the spices its skin. The fluffly white rice is drenched in their special blended gravy. When paired with the chicken, the flavor exploded in our mouth.

Moving on to Nasi Kukus Sotong Tonggek (RM18.50). Just like all the nasi kukus in their menu, the gravy, sauces and side dishes you get are the same. The only thing different is their main dish, and their sotong (squid) wasn’t a disappointment at all. Evenly battered and deep fried, the texture of the XL sotong is super crunchy and surprisingly not dry. It has a mild peppery, buttery finish to it that mixed well with the heavy flavored sauces.

Last one here and we still couldn’t get over the joy of lifting up their can, like everything just slides off and flows out. Their most expensive item on the menu, Nasi Kukus Ikan Tonggek (RM24.90). Nasi Kukus Tonggek uses Barramundi, or what we called Sea Bass. They’re then marinated with their special spices, battered and deep fried into golden brown. The flesh is still juicy, while it didn’t project much flavor, the sambal and other condiments rounded up the overall experience.
