Remember The Emperor’s New Groove? Here’s How You Can Make Their Iconic Bread

If you have watched the highly-underrated The Emperor’s New Groove animated movie, then you must know of Yzma’s assistant Kronk and his undying love for cooking and baking. Besides his spinach puffs, here’s a recipe for Challah, a type of ceremonial bread eaten at Jewish holidays and religious occasions.

Ingredients:

Steps:

  1. Place water in small bowl and sprinkle yeast and a pink of sugar. Stir well. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until a frothy layer forms on top.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine in flour, sugar and salt.
  3. In the centre of the flour, add in eggs egg yolk and oil. Mix well.
  4. Combine yeast mixture and egg mixture together. Mix until a dough forms.
  5. Place dough on a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes. The dough is ready when it becomes smooth and holds shape.
  6. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover (with a linen cloth) and place it somewhere warm. Let it rise for 2 hours until it has doubled in size.
  7. Divide the dough into 3 equal parts. Roll each piece into a long rope.

8. Gather the 3 pieces and press them together at the top. Braid the dough ropes, and press the end together when complete.

9. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Place braided loaf on paper and sprinkle with flour. Cover and let rise in warm place for 1 hour.

10. Prepare a rack in the middle of the oven and heat it to 177°C. Whisk egg white and 1 tablespoon of water to make egg wash. Brush egg wash all over the dough.

11. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, turn the tray it halfway through. When Challah is deeply brown, then it’s done!
